North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly praised soldiers who died by suicide to avoid capture, signalling a deeper and more explicit role in Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to CNN, Kim described such acts as the “highest form of loyalty” during the unveiling of a new war memorial in Pyongyang.
The report said the site honours thousands of North Korean troops believed to have died while fighting alongside Russian forces. Analysis cited in the report indicates more than 2,200 names are inscribed, pointing to significant battlefield losses.
Officials in South Korea and the West estimate over 10,000 North Korean troops have been deployed, with heavy casualties. Pyongyang had previously not acknowledged this level of involvement.
The memorial, attended by Russian representatives and linked to President Vladimir Putin, reinforces growing military ties between the two countries. The issue of captured North Korean soldiers remains a sensitive legal and diplomatic challenge.
