Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned on Thursday that Canada would need to “dramatically reduce” its reliance on the U.S. as the two countries' relationship grows increasingly strained. Carney, after a cabinet meeting discussing U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, stated that the era of a close bilateral relationship based on deep economic integration and security cooperation is over.

This shift comes as Trump threatened larger tariffs on Canada, if they collaborate with the European Union, to harm the US economy. Carney added that tariffs, if permanent, would necessitate a broad renegotiation of the countries' security and trade ties, and his government would explore new international partnerships
