OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company will not pursue an initial public offering this year, calling an immediate IPO “ill-advised” as concerns over advanced AI safety intensify.

The comments came as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged AI companies to deliberately slow the pace of developing increasingly capable models. According to the report, Altman and Elon Musk backed the proposal, marking an unusual agreement among major AI rivals.

Amodei proposed independent safety evaluations, shared standards among democratic nations and broader government coordination. He stressed that pacing AI does not mean stopping development, but allowing more time to improve safeguards.

OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki has also warned that companies have not solved AI alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed.

The report said growing concerns in Washington over AI-driven cyberattacks and data centers are adding pressure on the industry to adopt stronger safeguards.
