OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan appeared in federal court Tuesday after being arrested over allegations that he planted a recording device in an executive conference room at the company’s San Francisco headquarters.
According to prosecutors, security personnel discovered the device on September 30, concealed behind a television. The room was frequently used for confidential discussions about research, products and company strategy.
The company terminated Alfozan, who faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of illegally intercepting oral communications.
FBI Director Kash Patel said protecting American AI innovation is a counterintelligence priority. Federal authorities continue to investigate the alleged breach.
