Artificial intelligence featured in 84% of ransomware attacks reported by surveyed victims, while 44% said attackers exploited their own AI systems, according to cybersecurity firm Semperis’s 2026 Ransomware Risk Report.

The study surveyed 1,200 IT and security professionals across nine countries. It found that 69% of affected organizations experienced multiple successful attacks in the previous year, while 59% paid a ransom at least once. More than a third faced psychological or physical threats against employees.

Former US National Cyber Director Chris Inglis warned that AI is enabling criminals with limited technical skills to develop malicious code and automate attacks. AI can also help hackers identify system weaknesses, personalize fraudulent messages and adapt their tactics.

Researchers cautioned that compromised AI agents could misuse access permissions to penetrate sensitive corporate systems. However, experts said organizations should strengthen access controls rather than abandon AI.

The report urged businesses to use AI defensively to counter increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
