Pakistan has launched a search operation after a Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft carrying five crew members disappeared over the Arabian Sea while flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Karachi.

According to the Pakistan Airports Authority, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control on Tuesday night after reporting a navigational system fault.

Flight tracking data showed the plane experienced rapid altitude changes before entering a steep final descent. Its last known position was about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.

Al Jazeera reported that the Pakistan Navy, military aircraft and a merchant vessel are participating in the search. Authorities said no wreckage or survivors have been found so far.

K2 Airways, which operated the flight, said it is cooperating fully with investigators and expressed hope for the crew's safety. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered condolences to the families. If confirmed as a crash, it would be Pakistan's first major civilian aviation disaster since the 2020 Karachi plane crash.
