Pennsylvania has reported its sixth measles-associated death of 2026 after a 39-year-old woman in Franklin County died following a recent measles diagnosis, according to the county coroner.

The woman had underlying health conditions, officials said. The death marks the first measles-associated fatality reported in Franklin County in many years.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health defines a measles-associated death as one occurring within 30 days of symptom onset. However, the classification does not necessarily establish measles as the sole cause of death.

The Franklin County Coroner urged caution and vigilance in treating the disease and its complications.

State health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend vaccination as the best protection against measles, a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air. Health authorities continue to emphasize vaccination and awareness to help prevent further infections and serious complications.
