Pentagon Flags China Risks In Defense Hearing

The U.S. military leaders warned Congress that China’s growing military capabilities pose a major strategic threat, as lawmakers reviewed defense readiness for 2027, according to hearing statements.

Navy Vice Chief James Kilby said China’s military drills near Taiwan highlight the need for stronger U.S. naval forces in the Indo-Pacific. He stressed that American forces are working with allies to deter aggression and maintain regional stability.

Officials also pointed to China’s expanding space warfare capabilities. According to Space Force Vice Chief Shawn Bratton, Beijing is developing systems that could target U.S. satellites and disrupt military operations.

The Pentagon is also facing internal challenges, including equipment shortages and limited industrial capacity.

President Donald Trump has proposed a $1.5 trillion defense budget, including major naval investments to counter China’s buildup.

Lawmakers are expected to debate the proposal, with Taiwan and broader U.S.-China tensions likely to remain central to discussions.
