Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Reproductive Health Records Privacy Act, strengthening protections for patients seeking reproductive healthcare by restricting the sharing of sensitive medical records with out-of-state entities without the patient's consent.
The legislation, sponsored by State Senator Celina Villanueva and State Representative Mary Beth Canty, is designed to safeguard individuals seeking legal reproductive healthcare in Illinois from potential criminal investigations or legal action initiated by other states.
Under the new law, health information exchanges must separate reproductive health records from other medical data by July 1, 2027, adding another layer of privacy protection.
The Illinois Department of Public Health also announced expanded access to prescription contraceptives as part of broader reproductive healthcare initiatives.
Critics, including former Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey, argued the measure addresses a political issue rather than an immediate public need.
Supporters, however, maintain the law strengthens patient confidentiality and protects access to lawful healthcare services.
