Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged closer cooperation with former Soviet neighbors at a Commonwealth of Independent States summit in Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan, on Friday. Leaders from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and other regional countries attended the meeting.
Putin described the CIS as an influential regional integration organization and said the Russian language remained an important link among member states. Despite Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine, Russia’s trade with former Soviet neighbors exceeded $110 billion in 2025, with about 90% of transactions reportedly conducted in national currencies.
Pezeshkian said Iran had proposed new approaches to address regional tensions. Putin pledged to help pursue a resolution after adjustments to the proposals, underscoring Moscow’s continued engagement with Tehran and neighboring countries.
