An unprecedented eight Black major-party candidates are set to appear on U.S. ballots in gubernatorial races this November, marking a historic moment in American politics.
The number reached eight after Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds secured his party’s nomination for governor.
The candidates have taken different approaches to the significance of their campaigns.
Donalds has emphasised merit and achievement, while other candidates have highlighted issues affecting Black communities that they believe receive insufficient political attention.
Former New York Gov. David Paterson welcomed the bipartisan nature of the historic field, saying the development reflects progress in American politics.
The candidates will now compete in November elections that could further reshape the representation of Black Americans in state leadership.
