Report: North Korea Launders Billions Through Crypto, Fake Tech Jobs

A new international report has found that North Korean hackers have stolen billions of dollars through cryptocurrency heists and fake remote tech jobs to fund the regime’s nuclear weapons program.

The 138-page review, published by the Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team — which includes the U.S. and 10 allies — said Pyongyang’s cyber operatives have targeted global businesses, disrupted systems with malware, and laundered money to evade U.N. sanctions.

Investigators concluded that North Korea’s cyber capabilities now rival those of China and Russia, posing a major threat to governments and corporations.

Unlike other adversaries, Pyongyang primarily uses hacking to generate revenue for its regime. The report linked these activities directly to the financing of its ballistic missile and weapons of mass destruction programs.

The findings follow several major crypto thefts, including a $1.5 billion hack of the Bybit exchange earlier this year, traced by the FBI to North Korean intelligence.
