Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed into law a new Republican-drawn congressional map on Friday, finalizing a major redistricting push backed by President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Abbott, posting on X, called it “One Big Beautiful Map,” saying it guarantees fairer representation and strengthens Republican chances in Congress. Analysts say the map could add up to five GOP-held seats in the U.S. House.

The bill’s passage followed weeks of Democratic opposition, including a failed quorum boycott by Texas Democrats. They later returned after appearing alongside leaders from Democratic-run states, including California, which advanced its own partisan map to create more Democratic-leaning seats.
Democrats are now challenging the Texas map in court, with several lawsuits pending. A three-judge panel in El Paso has scheduled a preliminary injunction hearing for early October. The legal battle could determine how congressional districts are shaped before the 2026 elections.
