Five people died after a rescue attempt in the Scioto River near Powell, Ohio, turned tragic when multiple individuals entered the water to help a struggling swimmer.
According to the report, the incident began when one person entered the river to swim, prompting others to jump in to assist after the swimmer encountered difficulties.
The report said emergency responders recovered two women on Sunday, but they were pronounced dead at a hospital. Search crews later located the bodies of three men on Monday, bringing the death toll to five.
According to the report, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has renewed attention on the dangers of water rescue attempts, particularly when untrained bystanders enter hazardous conditions in an effort to save others.
