President Donald Trump has threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods, arguing that Canada should bear responsibility for the economic and environmental impact of wildfire smoke drifting into the United States.
According to the report, Trump accused Canada of failing to adequately manage its forests and said he planned to discuss the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Several Republican lawmakers also criticized Canada's wildfire management, with some suggesting stronger measures in response to the recurring cross-border smoke.
According to the report, Canadian officials defended their wildfire response and highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the two countries in combating major fires.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized that climate change is a shared global challenge and warned that unilateral measures could weaken the decades-long partnership that has seen Canada and the United States assist one another during severe wildfire seasons.
