Russia Considers Nuclear Testing In Response To Trump’s Comments

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Moscow is considering the possibility of resuming nuclear weapons testing following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments about restarting America’s own nuclear testing programs.

Speaking to Russia’s Security Council, Putin reaffirmed that Russia remains committed to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) but warned that if the U.S. or other signatories resume testing, “Russia would have to take appropriate and proportionate responsive measures.”

Putin said he has instructed government ministries to draft proposals on preparing for potential nuclear tests, though no final decision has been made. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told CNN that Moscow is only “investigating whether it is necessary” to start such preparations.

The remarks mark a tense new turn in nuclear diplomacy, signaling that both Washington and Moscow could be inching toward renewed nuclear brinkmanship unseen since the Cold War.
