Russian authorities have imposed health measures after a 28-year-old laboratory technician at a Siberian institute specializing in plague research died from pneumonia of unknown origin, according to CNN.
The researcher’s recent contacts are being tested, while unofficial reports said nearly 200 people were under observation. A regional official raised the possibility of plague, but authorities have not confirmed that diagnosis.
The institute monitors dangerous infectious diseases across Siberia and Russia’s Far East. Pneumonic plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, can spread between people through respiratory particles.
A nearby aluminum plant advised workers to wear masks. US officials said the CDC is monitoring the situation and urged Russian authorities to release accurate information.
The WHO says plague can be serious but is treatable with antibiotics and precautions.
