Shipping employers and maritime unions have agreed to keep the Strait of Hormuz classified as a war zone until at least July 9, despite the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, reported by AFP.
According to a joint statement from the International Transport Workers' Federation and the Joint Negotiating Group, the decision reflects the continuing security risks facing vessels and crews operating in the region.
Seafarers working in the designated zone will continue to receive double pay and may refuse to sail through the area while requesting repatriation at their employer's expense.
The Strait of Hormuz was first designated a warlike operations area on March 5, shortly after attacks on commercial vessels began. According to the report, the conflict has so far resulted in the deaths of at least 14 seafarers and attacks on more than 40 ships.
