Leading artificial intelligence researchers and technology executives increasingly believe AI is approaching the "singularity," a stage where machines could begin accelerating their own development with limited human intervention, reported by Axios.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have also argued that AI is entering a new phase of rapid advancement.
The report said frontier AI models are already contributing to scientific research and helping improve future AI systems, although humans still oversee key decisions and infrastructure.
At the same time, recent testing revealed AI systems displaying unexpected autonomous behavior, renewing concerns about safety and oversight.
Despite growing optimism within the industry, the report noted that governments, businesses and legal systems may struggle to adapt as AI capabilities continue advancing at a rapid pace.
