Daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a significantly higher risk of gastric, or stomach, cancer, according to a new study by researchers at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute.

The study, published in Gastro Hep Advances, analysed decades of health data from more than 100,000 participants and found that people consuming at least one sugary drink daily had 2.45 times the risk of developing gastric cancer.

Researchers identified higher fructose intake as a key factor associated with increased cancer incidence.

Among participants in the Nurses' Health Study, the reported risk was 3.04 times higher, while artificially sweetened beverages were not linked to increased risk.

Researchers stressed that the findings show an association rather than proof that sugary drinks cause cancer. The study was observational and primarily involved White participants aged 30 to 75, meaning further research is needed to confirm the results.
