According to the National Weather Service, the storm made landfall over Rota with sustained winds exceeding 180 mph, while hurricane-force winds threatened nearby Guam, home to key U.S. military installations including Andersen Air Force Base and Naval Base Guam.

Authorities warned of catastrophic structural damage, prolonged power outages, flash flooding and hazardous coastal conditions. More than 7,000 active-duty U.S. military personnel stationed on Guam were placed on the highest level of storm readiness.

The report said Saipan and Tinian, which are still recovering from Super Typhoon Sinlaku in April, were also expected to experience damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

Bavi is forecast to move westward after passing the Marianas, but officials continue to monitor conditions across the region.
