Super Typhoon Bavi, one of the strongest storms recorded this year, struck the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain and dangerous storm surges to U.S. Pacific territories, reported by CNN.
Authorities warned of catastrophic structural damage, prolonged power outages, flash flooding and hazardous coastal conditions. More than 7,000 active-duty U.S. military personnel stationed on Guam were placed on the highest level of storm readiness.
The report said Saipan and Tinian, which are still recovering from Super Typhoon Sinlaku in April, were also expected to experience damaging winds and heavy rainfall.
Bavi is forecast to move westward after passing the Marianas, but officials continue to monitor conditions across the region.
