Justice Department lawyers are defending President Donald Trump’s decision to revoke White House press credentials for CNN, MS NOW and Politico, citing national security and standards of journalistic conduct, according to CBS News.
In a court filing, DOJ lawyers argued that White House access is a privilege and said the administration had compelling reasons to restrict the three outlets.
The three organizations sued Trump and senior aides, arguing that the ban violates First Amendment protections and due process. They said the administration provided no advance notice or opportunity to challenge the decision.
A federal judge is scheduled to consider the case Wednesday, including whether the outlets should regain access.
The dispute follows earlier litigation involving The Associated Press and former CNN reporter Jim Acosta over White House press restrictions. The ban has also disrupted the television press pool, prompting CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox News to suspend the rotating system.
