President Donald Trump renewed his support for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Friday, urging the Senate to confirm him while defending the controversial $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund that has become the main obstacle to his nomination, according to CNN.
The report said Trump argued the fund was designed to compensate people who were unfairly targeted by the Biden administration, insisting it was not intended to benefit him personally.
According to CNN, Cornyn also wants clarification that a tax immunity provision linked to a settlement applies only to past investigations involving Trump and his family. Blanche has not publicly provided the guarantees sought by the senator.
The report said Trump accused Cornyn of opposing the nomination for political reasons after backing another candidate in the Texas Senate primary. Cornyn denied that claim and maintained his objections are based on enforceable legal commitments.
