President Donald Trump on Friday outlined the key obstacle in finalizing a trade deal with Canada, saying the two countries differ on their approach.
Speaking at the G7 summit in Alberta, Trump said, “It’s not so much a holding up, we just have different concepts.” He explained that he favors a straightforward tariff-based model, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney supports a more complex framework.

“I’m a tariff person,” Trump said. “It’s simple, easy, and precise. It goes by easily.” While acknowledging that Carney’s idea is “very good,” Trump said both concepts would be reviewed to find common ground.
The two leaders met earlier in the day to kick off the summit. Trump’s comments signal that while talks remain cordial, a resolution may hinge on bridging those economic philosophies. The U.S.-Canada negotiations come amid broader trade tensions and efforts to reshape global economic partnerships.
