Gulf Arab leaders are meeting President Donald Trump in New York amid growing concerns that the Iran conflict could escalate while the US reduces its military role in the region, according to CNN.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar previously persuaded Trump to delay a major attack on Iran, hoping diplomacy could produce an agreement. With no deal emerging, Gulf states now fear further Iranian retaliation against their territory and energy infrastructure.
Gulf governments are simultaneously concerned about discussions inside Washington over reducing US forces in the region. They fear a drawdown could weaken the security arrangement that has protected Gulf states for decades.
The report said Gulf leaders want specific demands from Trump, including protection of navigation routes and measures to prevent the conflict from becoming a prolonged regional war.
