President Donald Trump has formally nominated Todd Blanche to serve as attorney general, seeking to make permanent the role Blanche has held on an acting basis for more than two months.

Blanche assumed leadership of the Justice Department after Trump dismissed former Attorney General Pam Bondi in February. The nomination now sets the stage for what could be a closely watched Senate confirmation process.

The move comes amid scrutiny of several high-profile decisions made during Blanche’s tenure.

💡
According to reports, the Justice Department recently granted immunity protections to President Trump, members of his family, and the Trump Organization from certain Internal Revenue Service enforcement actions tied to tax matters predating a controversial settlement involving Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS.

Blanche has also been linked to the department’s handling of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

During recent congressional testimony, Bondi stated that Blanche was responsible for overseeing how the Justice Department complied with legal requirements concerning the release of Epstein-related files.

💡
Supporters argue Blanche has played a central role in advancing the administration’s priorities at the Justice Department, while critics contend that some of his actions raise questions about the department’s independence.

His nomination is expected to intensify debate over the future direction of federal law enforcement under the Trump administration.
