Trump Orders States To Verify Immigrant Status Of Medicaid Recipients

The Trump administration has directed all 50 states to review Medicaid rolls for potentially ineligible enrollees who may be undocumented immigrants.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began sending states lists of names in August. States like Ohio, Texas, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Utah have already received over 170,000 names to verify.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the move aims to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure benefits go only to those legally eligible. Critics, including the National Immigration Law Center, argue the step is redundant and politically motivated.

Some experts say it could cause eligible Americans to lose coverage due to bureaucratic hurdles.

The order follows President Trump’s February directive for federal agencies to prevent benefits misuse, part of his broader immigration enforcement agenda.
