US President Donald Trump warned that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, should be “very worried” as Washington and Tehran prepare for their first formal negotiations since US strikes destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities last year.

Tensions have surged following a violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran, prompting Trump to deploy US naval forces to the region and renew threats of military action.

Iran has warned that any attack would trigger immediate retaliation against US forces and assets.

Talks are scheduled for Friday in Muscat, Oman, involving Iran’s foreign minister and Trump’s special envoy, according to CNN.

The Trump administration says negotiations must address Iran’s nuclear program, missile development, support for terrorism, and human rights abuses. Tehran insists talks will focus only on nuclear issues and sanctions relief.

Trump said US action ended Iran’s nuclear ambitions and reduced regional fear of Tehran.
