President Donald Trump said a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could take place “very soon,” expressing optimism about progress toward ending the war.
The announcement follows renewed diplomatic activity, including a meeting between Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff in Saint Petersburg, alongside Witkoff’s discussions with Zelenskyy and European leaders in Oslo.
Zelenskyy reported that Ukrainian forces had reclaimed more than 800 square kilometres this year, retaken 26 settlements across three regions, including Lyman and Kupiansk, and reinforced frontline positions.
Putin has said negotiations should prioritize security arrangements for a lasting peace agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire, with further discussions expected after the US midterm elections.
