President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to call for the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians to revert to their former team names, which were dropped in recent years amid concerns of racial insensitivity toward Native Americans.
Trump claimed “massive” support from Native Americans for restoring the old names and accused modern society of erasing their heritage. “Times are different now than they were three or four years ago,” he wrote.

Later that day, Trump warned he would block plans for a new Commanders stadium at the old RFK site unless the team restored its previous name. However, a 2024 law signed by then-President Joe Biden handed control of the site to Washington, D.C., limiting federal influence over the project.
Trump also criticized the Cleveland Guardians’ rebranding, referring to the team as “one of the six original baseball teams” and praising its “storied past.”
