President Donald Trump says he plans to take legal action to reduce the dominance of major U.S. meatpacking companies and give farmers and ranchers more freedom to process their own food.
Trump described the current system as a “nasty monopoly,” as four companies—Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS USA and National Beef Packing—control about 85% of U.S. meat processing.
The Justice Department is separately investigating whether meatpacking companies illegally contributed to higher consumer prices.
Trump's proposal follows a long-running debate over concentration in the meatpacking industry, which both Trump and former President Joe Biden have sought to address.
The administration is expected to provide more details as it develops the legal framework for expanding independent meat processing.
