The deployment is part of a broader military buildup that reportedly includes relocating vulnerable troops, replenishing ammunition stocks and preparing fighter jets and bombers. An additional aircraft carrier strike group and Marine Expeditionary Unit are also expected to join US forces in the region in November.

President Donald Trump has not made a final decision on further military action, although the report said he is considering strikes against Iranian infrastructure and nuclear facilities. A negotiated agreement remains possible.

Iran has warned that renewed attacks could trigger retaliation against energy infrastructure, airports and other civilian facilities across the Persian Gulf. US intelligence concerns about Iranian threats against American officials and citizens have added to regional tensions.

The timing and scope of any potential campaign remain uncertain, according to the report.
