The Justice Department and lawyers for CNN, MS NOW and Politico are returning to court Thursday as a legal battle continues over President Donald Trump’s decision to restrict the outlets’ White House access, according to CBS News.
US District Judge Timothy Kelly previously issued a temporary order blocking the restrictions and restoring the journalists’ access. That order expires Thursday. The news organizations are now seeking a preliminary injunction to keep the ban blocked while the lawsuit proceeds.
The White House has defended the restrictions, citing concerns over journalistic professionalism and national security. The Justice Department argues White House access is a privilege rather than a right and said the outlets received adequate notice.
The news organizations argue the restrictions violate the First Amendment and amount to retaliation over unfavorable coverage of the Trump administration.
