Trump’s Sanctions On Rosneft, Lukoil Mark Shift On Russia Policy

Vladimir Putin

President Donald Trump’s decision to sanction Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, marks a significant escalation in Washington’s stance toward Moscow.

The new measures come after months of Kremlin maneuvering aimed at persuading Trump to soften U.S. support for Ukraine.

According to CNN, the sanctions and Trump’s cancellation of a planned summit with Vladimir Putin in Budapest signal that the White House is losing patience with Russia’s delaying tactics on peace talks.

Kremlin officials, including Maria Zakharova, dismissed the sanctions’ impact, claiming Russia has developed “strong immunity” to Western pressure.

However, the move has rattled Moscow’s confidence that Trump could be swayed through flattery and economic promises.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky praised the decision as a “very important” step to bring Russia to the negotiating table.

European leaders also welcomed what they view as the first genuine sign of a tougher U.S. approach to the Kremlin.
