White House Declares 'No Immediate' Trump-Putin Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin with U.S. President Donald Trump

The White House has confirmed that there are no plans for President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet “in the immediate future,” canceling expectations of a summit in Budapest.

Trump had earlier said he anticipated meeting Putin “within two weeks or so” to discuss the ongoing war, but U.S. officials now say talks will remain at the adviser level for now.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone call Monday, which the White House described as “productive.”

Officials added that an in-person meeting between the two diplomats was unnecessary at this stage.

The Kremlin also downplayed the idea of a summit, clarifying that no date had ever been set. “You can’t postpone what was not scheduled,” a Kremlin spokesman said.
