New York police have identified two suspects in the stabbing of off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes during an alleged robbery attempt in the Bronx.
Mercedes was stabbed up to seven times on East 208th Street before pursuing the attackers, who fled without taking anything.
Police identified the suspects as D’Angelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia and believe they may have left New York City following the attack. Authorities said both men are Dominican nationals who are in the United States unlawfully.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin blamed the Biden administration’s immigration policies for their release, while authorities continue investigating.
Mercedes was released from Jacobi Hospital on Monday and was greeted by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and fellow officers. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
