The United States launched airstrikes against targets along Iran's southern coast on Friday after accusing Tehran of violating a recently agreed ceasefire by attacking commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to U.S. officials, the military response followed an incident in which Iranian forces allegedly launched four drones at vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

Officials said the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely was struck during the attack, while U.S. Central Command intercepted three additional drones before they reached their targets.

No casualties were immediately reported, but the incident raised fresh concerns about the security of one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass, was due to remain open under a 60-day ceasefire arrangement intended to restore safe commercial navigation.

Following the latest attack, the United Nations' maritime agency suspended its emergency mission to escort thousands of stranded vessels through the corridor while it reassesses security conditions.

The exchange marks a renewed escalation in regional tensions, with global shipping and energy markets closely monitoring developments in the Gulf.
