The U.S. Treasury Department has announced that the U.S. Mint will release a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump later this fall.

According to the report, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the coin is intended to honor the nation's legacy of liberty and serve as a symbol of patriotism.

The report said the coin will depict Trump in a suit with a stern expression and will be manufactured from a non-precious metal with a gold-colored finish.

It is being issued as a commemorative coin rather than standard circulating currency.

According to the report, the announcement has drawn criticism because federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency.

However, the report stated that the Treasury Secretary has the authority to authorize the issuance of commemorative coins under applicable federal provisions.
