United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Tuesday that the war in Sudan is “spiraling out of control” after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the key Darfur city of El Fasher, trapping hundreds of thousands of civilians. Speaking at a UN summit in Qatar, Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire and urged world powers to halt the flow of weapons into Sudan.

UN officials reported mass executions, sexual violence, and ethnically targeted killings since the RSF takeover, though the group has denied the allegations. Witness accounts and satellite images suggest widespread devastation.

The RSF had besieged El Fasher for 18 months, cutting off food and medical supplies before seizing control last week.
The conflict between Sudan’s military and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced 14 million, pushing parts of the country into famine, according to the UN.
