Former Vice President Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful and polarizing figures in modern U.S. politics, has died at 84, his family confirmed Monday. Cheney, who served under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, died from complications of pneumonia and cardiovascular disease.

Regarded as the chief architect of America’s “war on terror,” Cheney played a key role in the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, shaping U.S. foreign policy after 9/11.

Though hailed by supporters for his resolve, he was widely criticized for promoting faulty intelligence about weapons of mass destruction and defending controversial interrogation practices.

In later years, Cheney broke with the GOP over Donald Trump, calling him “a coward” and “the greatest threat to the republic.”

Despite failing health and multiple heart attacks, Cheney remained politically active, writing memoirs and speaking out until his final years.
