The United States cancelled the G20 foreign ministers’ traditional group photograph in Atlanta after European diplomats reportedly threatened to walk out over the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The gathering, chaired by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday and Saturday, comes amid deep divisions over the Russia-Ukraine conflict and other international crises.
Former US ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly criticised Lavrov’s invitation, arguing that his presence could undermine the message Western members wanted to convey.
The meeting also serves as a precursor to the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December, which President Donald Trump will host at his Miami golf club.
