US Cancels Joint Marine Drill With South Korea Over Iran War Constraints

The United States has canceled a major joint amphibious exercise with South Korea because of military force constraints linked to the ongoing war with Iran, South Korean officials said Monday.

The Ssangyong exercise is designed to strengthen amphibious and marine operations and typically involves forces from multiple military branches.

The cancellation comes after President Donald Trump ordered a reduction in the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, cutting their planned duration from 11 days to five days.

The decision highlights the wider impact of U.S. military commitments in the Middle East on its forces and training activities elsewhere. It also raises questions about the ability of Washington and Seoul to maintain the scale of joint exercises while American forces remain heavily committed to the Iran conflict.
