US Cyclosporiasis Cases Top 11,000 As Outbreak Spreads

More than 7,400 additional suspected cases have been reported, bringing the total reported by state health departments to over 11,000. The outbreak has resulted in 308 hospitalizations, with no deaths reported.

The United States is experiencing its largest recorded outbreak of cyclosporiasis, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 4,173 laboratory-confirmed cases across 41 states since May 1.

According to the agency, more than 7,400 additional suspected cases have been reported, bringing the total reported by state health departments to over 11,000. The outbreak has resulted in 308 hospitalizations, with no deaths reported.

Michigan has recorded the sharpest increase, reporting 6,148 cases by July 21, while North Carolina and Indiana have also seen significant spikes, far exceeding their historical averages, the report said.

Investigators have linked at least 1,644 illnesses in five states to shredded iceberg lettuce sold by Taylor Farms and grown in central Mexico.

The company issued a voluntary recall after investigations by the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration.

Federal officials said multiple food sources may be involved, while experts cautioned that increased testing and reporting could also be contributing to the record case numbers.
