The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has launched an investigation into shredded lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to certain Taco Bell restaurants following a potential link to a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak.
According to the report, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed selected lettuce products from some locations as a precaution, although health officials have not confirmed the restaurant as the source of the outbreak.
The report said cyclosporiasis is a parasitic illness that can cause prolonged episodes of severe watery diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.
According to the report, Taylor Farms has previously been associated with foodborne illness investigations, including outbreaks linked to salad products and other fresh produce.
Health authorities continue to investigate the source of the current infections, noting that the parasite's incubation period of up to two weeks makes tracing contaminated food products particularly challenging.
