A federal judge in Brooklyn has ordered Indian billionaire Gautam Adani to answer questions by July 15 about whether any quid pro quo influenced the U.S. Justice Department's decision to dismiss foreign bribery and securities fraud charges against him.
The report said the court's scrutiny intensified after politically appointed Justice Department officials moved to drop the case. Two career prosecutors withdrew after the dismissal request, raising further questions.
CBS News reported that Adani's legal team allegedly told Justice Department officials the company could invest $10 billion in the United States if charges were dropped.
Justice Department official Trent McCotter denied the investment proposal influenced his decision, calling such claims false.
Judge Garaufis said McCotter's filing introduced new concerns that an undisclosed agreement may have existed, warranting further examination by the court.
