US Marijuana Smoking Matches Record High As Cigarette Smoking Hits Low

Marijuana smoking in the United States has returned to a record high, while cigarette smoking remains at its lowest level, according to Gallup's latest Consumption Habits poll.

Seventeen percent of Americans say they currently smoke marijuana, matching the record recorded in 2023 and more than doubling the 7% reported when Gallup first measured the behaviour in 2013. Adults aged 30 to 49 reported the highest rate, at 25%.

Meanwhile, cigarette smoking stands at a record-low 11%, while vaping remains at 9%.

The figures come as federal cannabis policy continues to evolve and several states consider further legalisation. The changing consumption patterns highlight marijuana's growing presence in American life as traditional cigarette use continues to decline.
