A major trial involving Moderna and Merck’s personalized cancer vaccine has raised hopes that mRNA technology could become a powerful tool against multiple forms of cancer.
According to Reuters, the treatment helped prevent melanoma from returning or spreading in a large study involving more than 1,000 high-risk patients whose tumors had been surgically removed. The vaccine is designed to train the immune system to recognize mutations specific to an individual patient’s cancer.
Doctors described the findings as a significant advance for personalized cancer treatment. Merck and Moderna are also testing the approach against lung, bladder, kidney, pancreatic and stomach cancers.
Reuters reported that rival companies, including Roche and BioNTech, are pursuing similar mRNA-based cancer vaccines. Results from several trials are expected over the coming years.
