Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said artificial intelligence companies should take responsibility for their technology rather than expect the federal government to provide a legal “liability shield,” according to CNBC.
Bessent said humans, not AI systems, remain responsible for their actions. His comments come as technology executives and researchers debate the risks of increasingly advanced AI models, with some calling for slower development and stronger safeguards.
Bessent also discussed financial markets following his recent talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
US Treasury yields have climbed sharply since the war involving Iran began, with the 10-year yield recently exceeding 5%. Mortgage rates have also moved above 7%.
Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest-rate target to 3.75% to 4% on September 16, citing elevated inflation. Trump has repeatedly pushed for lower borrowing costs.
