A Utah man has been charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder following a stabbing at Valley Fair Mall that prosecutors say was motivated by religious bias.

According to the report, Peter Michael Larsen allegedly attacked Muslim mall employee Syed Sohail Uddin with a knife and told investigators he targeted the victim because of his faith.

The report said bystanders intervened to stop the assault, and a second man was injured while attempting to help the victim.

Larsen, who was on parole from a previous case, was taken into custody, and Salt Lake County prosecutors have indicated they will seek hate crime sentence enhancements in connection with the attack.

According to the report, the victim remains hospitalized, while community members have raised more than $300,000 to support his recovery.

Prosecutors and community leaders condemned the incident, emphasizing that the attack does not reflect the values of the broader community and calling for unity in the face of rising concerns about religiously motivated violence.
