Utah has launched Doctronic, an artificial intelligence chatbot that allows eligible residents to refill certain prescriptions online without visiting a doctor.
According to the report, the program operates through the state's regulatory sandbox, which permits officials to temporarily waive certain rules to test emerging AI technologies under the supervision of a five-member oversight board.
The report said the system covers 190 refillable medications, prompting concerns from medical professionals about patient safety.
According to the report, 11 members of Utah's medical board urged state officials to halt the initiative earlier this year, arguing they were excluded from the decision-making process.
Dr. Eric Bressman of the University of Pennsylvania also questioned the program, saying existing state and federal laws generally reserve prescribing authority for licensed medical professionals.
